Wakiso Hill Women Football Club earned a late 1-1 draw against Kampala Queens in the opening game of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League at Lugogo.
Despite being favourites heading into the new season, Kampala Queens struggled for a breakthrough in yet again what was dubbed as a David vs Goliath affair.
The Queens of Soccer expectedly had that best business in the recently concluded transfer window whereas Wakiso Hill lost a couple of crucial players including their skipper Zaitun Namaganda and Moureen Kimono who joined Kampala Queens.
From the onset, Kampala Queens dominated proceedings and nearly got an early opener in the first minute of the game through newly appointed skipper Shamirah Nalugya but her strike rattled the cross bar.
Wakiso Hill teenage goalkeeper Halimah Kasuubo had her moment to shine with a couple of saves and notably denied Nalugya and Shamsa Najjuma on two more occasions.
Wakiso Hill’s resilience and neat defending kept the scoreline unchanged until the 53rd minute through Najjuma whose snap shot instantly beat Kasuubo and her defense to grab the lead eventually.
Kampala Queens eventually got off the boil as Wakiso Hill stayed in the game before eventually seizing a glorious opportunity to tie the scores.
Judith Mawuwa, one of the many Wakiso Hill debutants on the day, scored a brilliant free kick that was not well dealt with by the KQ keeper Gloria Namakula Zaza in the 90th minute.
The result was a hard fought draw for the Wakiso Antelopes but equally a very disappointing for Charles Ayiekoh’s coached side.
Wakiso Hill and national U17 defender Faridah Namirimu was voted the Finance Trust Women of the Match for her outstanding defensive work.
Kampala Queens will visit She Corporate in their next game next week while Wakiso Hill with host champions Kawempe Muslim at Kitende.
