Gov’t to inject over Shs100Bn in CHAN Preparations

The government of Uganda will inject UGX 113 billion to cater for the preparations of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The delayed 2024 CHAN tournament will be Co-hosted in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania between 1st- 28 February next year.

State Minister of Sports Peter Ogwang confirmed the government’s commitment towards facilitating the CHAN preparations. The allocated government funds will cater for essential logistics, including transportation, accommodation for teams and officials, and operational costs.

“As the government, we are the primary investors in this tournament. The $30 million will be spent under strict conditions to ensure every dollar benefits the tournament and our nation,” Ogwang said during the Local Organizing Committee meeting on Tuesday

Ogwang also revealed that only Namboole will be used to host the tournament with four additional training facilities

“We are only going to use Namboole and four additional training facilities. There are a few petty holes but I want to thank our chairperson who has been following up in terms of readiness of infrastructure are on time. By the 1st of February we will be having all facilities ready for use.” Said Ogwang as quoted by NBS Sport Website

Players competing in domestic leagues on the African continent feature in the CHAN tournament.

Meanwhile, the second round of the Qualifiers are to be played on 20th-22nd December.

Hosts Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania who will automatically qualify for the event are all taking part in the qualifiers.

The CECAFA Zone which has the three hosts will have an additional slot due to their automatic qualification as hosts and as a result the number of teams for the final tournament will increase to 19 teams.

Zones WAFU A, WAFU B, UNAF, UNIFFAC, and COSAFA will each have three qualifying teams.

Senegal are the reigning CHAN champions following their 5-4 penalty shootout triumph over previous hosts Algeria last year.
