Burundi suffered a slender 1-0 defeat to Uganda Cranes in the first leg of the CECAFA Zone Qualifiers for the CHAN 2024 at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo on Thursday.

Police FC striker Isaac Ogwang scored the only goal of the contest that eliminated Burundi from progressing to the final tournament.

Uganda has already sealed a place at the 2024 CHAN tournament as Co-host alongside Tanzania and Kenya.

Burundi were seeking to take up the only extra slot allocated to CECAFA region through the qualifying rounds but cannot qualify after losing their first leg games to Uganda despite having a second leg.

Sudan and South Sudan who beat Ethiopia and Rwanda respectively are now the only teams with a chance to qualify as the 4th team in the CECAFA Zone.

Burundi will lock horns with Uganda Cranes in the return leg on Sunday, 29th December at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo.

The final tournament will be hosted in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from February 1st to 28th of the same month.
