Police opens up on Lawal’s death

Police preliminary investigations indicate that Vipers SC forward Abubaker Lawal fell from the third floor of Voice Shopping Mall on Monday, February 24th 2025.

In a statement released by Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Public Relations officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Nigerian arrived at the mall in his car UBQ 695G to meet his Tanzanian friend Omary Naima.

According to Police Lawal allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade at approximately 8:00 am.

“Preliminary reports indicate that Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle, registration number UBQ 695G, to meet his friend, Omary Naima, Tanzanian national residing in room 416 since February 20, 2025. According to Naima, she left Lawal in the room preparing tea and proceeded to a game center within the mall. Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.” Read part of the Police Statement

Police also confirmed that items which included two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers belonging to the deceased were found in his backpack.

Lawal was unused substitute during Vipers 2-0 win over Mbarara City FC in Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 32 tie at Kitende.

He last featured for the six time Uganda Premier league against KCCA FC when he replaced Moses Waiswa in the 85th minute at Lugogo.

This season, Lawal had made eight league appearances for Vipers.

He joined the Kitende based side in July 2022 from Rwanda’s AS Kigali where he had spent two season.

Lawal had also previously played in the Nigerian Premier League with Kano Pillars FC, Wikki Tourists FC and FC Nasarawa.
