The Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has flagged off a delegation from St. Noa Girls Schools Football Team and St. Mary’s Kitende that will represent Uganda at the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship in Ghana.
The flag off ceremony was held on Thursday at the Parliament of Uganda and was attended by the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, Rev. Canon Dr. Duncans Mugumya, FUFA President and Member of Parliament for Budiope East Constituency Honorable Moses Magogo, USSSA President Justus Mugisha, USSSA 3rd Vice President M. Harriet Margaret Apolot and USSSA CEO Christopher Mugisha.
USSSA President Mugisha hailed the government for its support towards school sports.
“We thank the government for the support given to school sports. We want to remind you that during our visit at the State House, the President promised us that each zone would receive one bus and a sports facility; up to now, we are still waiting.”
Magogo acknowledged both schools for their impact towards the development of Ugandan football
“St. Noa Girls and St. Mary’s Boarding School Kitende have been instrumental in developing Ugandan football. I want to appreciate their commitment and wish them success in Ghana.”
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament supported both teams with a $5,000 token of appreciation each.
The tournament is scheduled to kick off on the 23rd and run until the 26th in Ghana’s capital, Accra, featuring eight teams in each category (boys and girls) from the four CAF regions, with Uganda participating in both.
CAF confirmed African legends Asamoah Gyan and Clementine Toure as assistants for the Official Draw on Monday, 21 April of the tournament and will be held at the MultiChoice offices in Accra.
Also present at the draw will be Abedi Pele, Adjoa Bayor (both Ghana), Robert Kidiaba (DR Congo), as well as Amanda Dlamini (South Africa), who alongside Gyan and Toure will play a supporting role to the participating teams throughout the competition.
South Africa are the current holders of the CAF African Schools Football Championship Girls U-15 title, after clinching it in a closely contested encounter against Morocco in Tanzania last year.
The Boys U-15 title is held by Tanzania, who lifted the trophy in front of their supporters last year, following their win over Guinea.
Winners of both the Boys’ and Girls’ competition will each receive USD 300 000 prize money, with the runners-up receiving USD 200 000 and bronze medallists USD 150 000 to be utilised for development projects within schools.
