The Buganda Kingdom’s Minister of Sports, Owek. Robert Serwanga, has urged all stakeholders in the 2025 Masaza Cup to uphold discipline, unity, and responsibility as the historic tournament enters its 21st year.
Speaking during a leaders’ symposium attended by team heads, sports experts, and key tournament organizers, Owek. Serwanga expressed gratitude to all individuals who have committed to serving their counties (Masaza) this season. He emphasized that this year’s competition is expected to stand out from previous editions, calling for excellence at every level.
“This season will be remarkably different. We appreciate everyone who has taken on leadership and support roles for their teams. You are the backbone of this tournament,” said Serwanga.
He took the opportunity to strongly condemn incidents that have tainted the tournament’s reputation in recent years, including road chaos, bribery of referees, match-fixing, and avoidable delays.
“We must protect the image of the Masaza Cup. Last year, we witnessed accidents, corruption, and unacceptable conduct. That must stop,” he stated firmly.
Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, he said, “Everyone is essential to football journalists, medics, fans, leaders, referees, and security officers. Each of us must play our part in strengthening this cultural and sporting treasure.”
Owek. Serwanga praised the Masaza Cup’s legacy, reminding the audience that the tournament has been a symbol of unity and pride in Buganda for over two decades.
“These competitions have been played for 20 years. Those who laid the foundation gave us something precious. It’s now our responsibility to protect and elevate it,” he added.
As he concluded, the Minister called for professionalism and discretion when handling disputes, discouraging the use of media to air internal issues, and reminding everyone of their duty to serve under the leadership of the Kabaka, the cultural head of Buganda.
“The Kabaka is the symbol of unity in Buganda. Let us remember whom we serve and honor this tournament by doing our part with respect and responsibility.”
The 2025 Buganda Masaza Cup competition is scheduled to kickoff on 21st June at Kitovu Sports Arena with holders Buddu playing the opener.
