The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga has confirmed that starting next year all the teams that feature in the prestigious Masaza Cup competition will turn into football clubs.
While addressing the media during the official launch of the 2025 Masaza Cup competition at Bulange Mengo on Wednesday, the Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister revealed that the cabinet approved the suggestion that all Masaza Cup teams be named football clubs in 2026.

“The cabinet approved that starting next year all Masaza Cup teams will be named football clubs. This will officially begin in 2026, let me hope it’s clear to all the team managers of the respective Masaza Cup teams.” Said Owek.Mayiga
The prestigious Buganda Masaza Cup is contested by all the 18 counties that make up the Kingdom these are Buddu, Buweekula, Buvuma, Buluuli, Busiro, Bulemeezi, Mawokota, Mawogola, Kyaddondo, Gomba, Ssingo, Bugerere, Butambala, Busujju, Kkooki, Kyaggwe, Kabula and Ssese.
Buddu are the reigning competition champions and will kickoff with record winners Gomba in a Bulange group contest due on Saturday at Kitovu Sports Arena.
Buddu are three time winners following their triumphs in 2016, 2021 and 2024 while Gomba have won it five times in 2004, 2009, 2014, 2017 and 2020. Eric Kisuze is Buddu head coach whereas last year’s winning coach Simon Ddungu alias Dunga is Gomba’s coach.
