The 2025 Masaza Cup tournament officially kicked off on Saturday, 21st June at the Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka.
The opening game was Bulange Group contest between current holders Buddu and record competition winners Gomba.
Buddu smiled to a 1-0 victory with Chrispus Sseruwugge scoring the all important goal in the second period of the game.
The closely contested game needed a special Sseruwuge sensational strike to break Gomba’s resilience.
Buddu had earlier threatened in the first period with Micheal Walaga and Yiga Stephen both forcing Gomba goalkeeper Ssenyonjo Julius into decent saves.
Ssenyonjo however couldn’t stop Sseruwugge’s spectacular with ten minutes to regulation time.
By full-time whistle, it was a perfect revenge for defending champions Buddu who lost home and away to Gomba in the semifinal of the 2023 edition.
The Masaza Cup tournament will resume next weekend with various matches in the other groups.
The prestigious Buganda Kingdom organized event is sponsored by Airtel Uganda, Plascon Uganda, Centenary Bank and Pilsner.
