The 2025 Masaza Cup got off to a thrilling start on 21st June at the Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka as defending champions Buddu edged record-holders Gomba 1-0 in a fiercely contested opening fixture. The lone goal of the match came in the 77th minute courtesy of a stunning long-range strike from midfielder Crispus Sseruwugge, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and sealing Buddu’s place in history as the first team in five years to win the tournament’s opening match.
It was a game played under an electric atmosphere, with fans showing up in overwhelming numbers to witness the showdown between two footballing giants. Gomba came out strong in the early stages, launching relentless attacks, but Buddu’s goalkeeper Marvin Ssali Ssebirago delivered a string of fine saves to keep his team in contention. The first half was tightly contested, with Herbert Onen’s organized Gomba defence holding strong against Buddu’s determined advances.
The second half delivered end-to-end action, with both teams displaying high intensity and skill. Ultimately, it was Buddu who broke the deadlock and defended their lead with composure, igniting celebrations among their loyal fans and stakeholders in Masaka.
Among those present to witness the spectacle was Plascon, returning for the third consecutive year as a proud co-sponsor of the Masaza Cup, and as a direct partner of Buddu FC. Speaking after the match, Plascon’s Marketing Coordinator Benjamin Bicung expressed the brand’s pride in supporting a tournament that has become a cornerstone of Ugandan sport and culture.
“It feels incredible to be back,” Benjamin said. “The Masaza Cup is a celebration of community, talent, and identity. As Plascon, we’re honored to once again be part of something that brings together millions of Ugandans across Buganda and beyond.”
Reflecting on the match and the broader impact of the tournament, Benjamin noted the importance of youth empowerment and community upliftment.
“This tournament aligns perfectly with our values community development, empowerment, and progress. It uplifts young players, strengthens local economies, and keeps cultural heritage alive. Supporting it is our way of investing in the future of Uganda, especially the youth,” he added.
Plascon’s continued support has had a tangible impact both on and off the pitch. Beyond creating pathways for young players, many of whom have graduated to the Uganda Premier League and even the national team the tournament has become an economic and cultural force. “Players, vendors, transporters, local artisans many benefit from the business this tournament brings to their communities. It’s a ripple effect of opportunity,” Benjamin emphasized.
This year, fans can look forward to even more from Plascon, with the return of the popular Twaake campaign, fan activations, giveaways, and interactive experiences aimed at making the Masaza Cup more engaging than ever.
Addressing the players, Benjamin shared a heartfelt message: “This is your moment grab it with both hands. Play with passion, discipline, and purpose. You never know who is watching.
