Why Kin Kariisa resigned as Member for both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 Local Organizing Committees

Next Media Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kin Kariisa has resigned as member of the organising committee for both 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Kariisa had been named on the national committee to market and promote both tournaments but in a document dated Friday, 11th July 2025 he has decided to step aside.

“After careful reflection, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as a member of the Organising Committees for both CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, effective immediately. This decision is based on personal reasons that require my full attention at this time.”

Reads part of the statement before adding,

“It has been a true honour to serve alongside a dedicated team working toward two of the most significant events in Uganda’s sporting history. I am proud of the strides we have made together in preparing to host the continent and showcasing the best of Ugandan talent and hospitality. While I may no longer serve in an official capacity, I remain fully supportive of the Committee’s efforts. Through my role at Next Media, I will continue to advocate for and contribute to the success of both tournaments and the overall growth of Ugandan sport. I sincerely thank you and the entire Committee for the opportunity to be part of this important national assignment. I wish you continued success in the work ahead.” Kariisa noted

In May, 2024 Janet Museveni unveiled the committees for both tournaments and included people of vast experience in different fields, such as Hon. Moses Magogo (President FUFA), Dr. Joseph Muvawala (Executive Director National Planning Authority), Rev. Can Dr Duncan Mugumya (Commissioner Physical Education and Sports- MoES), Pius Biribononoha (Deputy Solicitor General and Ex-officio from the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs) and Jacqueline Basemera (Principal Assistant Secretary -MoES and Secretary to LOC).

Others members were : Brighton Barugahare (Government Services), Ambrose Tashobya (Infrastructure and Facilities), Justus Mugisha (Sporting), Kalema Ronnie (Competition Organizing), Dr. Ogwel Bernard Patrick (Finance and Resource Mobilization), Rogers Byamukama (Protocol and Hospitality), Dr. Mugimba Dennis (Marketing and Communication).
