Senegal finished third at the delayed African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 after overcoming Sudan 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday.

The defending champions, denied a place in the final after losing to Morocco on penalties in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Victory means Senegal secured a podium finish in back-to-back tournaments, while Sudan who earlier in the week lost to Madagascar settled for fourth despite a spirited display.

Sudan took the lead in the 6th minute through Mohamed Tia Asad who rose highest to head home from Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s corner.

Senegal levelled matters in the 58th minute through Seyni Ndiaye’s precise header.

During the penalty shootout, Walieldin Khdir and Musab Makeen missed Sudan’s two kicks but Mohamed Ahmed Saeed and Ahmed Tabanja.

Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and finally Libasse Guèye all converted, for Senegal giving them a 4-2 shootout victory.

Meanwhile, the curtains will officially close tonight as record competition winners Morocco take on Madagascar in the final due in Kenya.
