How players will benefit from the new league format
•Medical Insurance for Players
FUFA has partnered with Case MedInsurance to provide medical insurance cover for players in case of injuries or medical emergencies. FUFA paid a premium of 480m UGX cover for players in UPL and even FUFA Women Super League (25 players per club).
•Locker Room Bonuses (Win Bonuses for players)
FUFA has introduced a win bonus for players in the league to boost player morale and motivation. For every win, each player will be given a win bonus, deposited on Mobile numbers submitted by the player through their clubs within 48 hours after the match. FUFA has placed 444M UGX for the win bonuses going straight to the players.
•Man of the Match award
A Man of the Match award that comes with money at 74m UGX in cash to players, recognizing and rewarding outstanding performances.
•Data analysis using the catapult
The use of catapult technology for data analysis will help coaches and players gain valuable insights into player performance, enabling them to make data-driven decisions and improve their game.
•Prize Money for clubs
Increased prize money for every team in the league depending on final ranking of the season. Clubs will directly use this money to motivate their players to go for wins hence create competition-competition. This gives a player a peaceful mind while playing knowing that there is prize money for his club at the end of season.
•More Matches for Players
The new format of three rounds guarantees a minimum of 32 matches per club, providing players with more opportunities to showcase their skills, gain experience, and develop their game.
•Player Security with Contract
Players with contracts having two or more years remaining are eligible for licensing for 2025/26 season, ensuring job security and stability. Exceptions are made for players;
– Aged 31 and above during the upcoming season
– With existing contracts signed before 30th June 2024, who will serve the remaining part of their contract
This provision allows players to plan their careers and focus on their performance without uncertainty.
These reforms aim to enhance the overall competitiveness and sustainability of the Uganda Premier League, benefiting players and clubs alike.
Despite the ongoing criticism over the new league format, the 2025/26 league campaign is slated to kickoff on Friday, 26th September.
