FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Mexican President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, to discuss the preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

During the meeting, the historic Azteca Stadium was confirmed as the host venue for the opening match of the tournament on June 11, 2026.

Azteca stadium will make history as the first stadium in the world to host three World Cup openings (1970, 1986, and 2026). An achievement that reinforces its place as one of the most iconic venues in global football.

“Mexico will experience an extraordinary moment; it will have the pride of hosting the opening,” Sheinbaum noted on social media after the meeting with Infantino.

During the same meeting Infantino gave Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum a symbolic and special gift.This is a large scale replica of the ticket for the inaugural World Cup match of 2026, which will be played at Mexico City’s iconic Aztec Stadium. The gift includes a particular detail: the number one seat is marked on the ticket, symbolizing Mexico’s place of honor at this historic event.
