Sekagya appointed as New York Red Bulls II head coach

Former Uganda Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya has been appointed as New York Red Bulls II head coach ahead of their inaugural season in the MLS Next Pro.

Sekagya becomes the third head coach in Red Bulls II history after spending eight seasons as assistant coach.

He replaces Gary Lewis who left the club in July last year.

“Ibrahim [Sekagya] has played a crucial role in the development of Red Bulls II in addition to his success as a player with the main club.”

“We know he will continue his hard work and dedication to improve in every facet of the club.” Sporting Director Denis Hamlett confirmed the development.

Sekagya thanked the club for entrusting him

“I am thrilled to continue my journey with the New York Red Bulls organization and lead New York Red Bulls II to success.”

“I cannot wait to get this season started and show all of the work that has been done this winter to put a well-balanced squad on the pitch.”

In July last year, Sekagya was named as the club interim head coach and guided the team in their final 17 matches of the season.

Sekagya joined the Red Bulls II coaching staff after his retirement in 2015 for its inaugural season in USL that same year.

Born in Kawempe Kampala, Sekagya started his senior career with Kampala City Council (KCC FC) in 1992, before moving to Argentina in 1998 to try to make a career in football.

In Argentina he featured for Atletico de Rafaela in the Primera B Nacional, Ferro Carril Oeste in the Primera B Metropolitana and Arsenal de Sarandi in the Argentine Primera Division.

Sekagya joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2007 and them win three Austrian Football Bundesliga titles over a four-year span and was also part of the team that won the 2012 Austrian Cup.

He joined the New York Red Bulls in July of 2013 and spent two seasons with the club.
