The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has named Crested Cranes midfielder Phiona Nabbumba as the female footballer of year 2022 instead of Hasifa Nassuna.

Earlier on, USPA had named Nassuna as the best female footballer of the year 2022 in a declaration which has been rescinded and referred to as a genuine oversight.

” The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) Executive would like to clarify a genuine oversight with Kampala Queens WFC player Hasifah Nassuna named Female Player of the Year 2022 instead of Phiona Nabbumba.” Reads part of the statement released by USPA.

” We want to inform the public that Nabbumba is the USPA Player of the Year 2022 and that the earlier declaration in favour of Nassuna is null.”

Nabbumba who currently plies her trade in Denmark with B93 Women Football Club, was the MVP of the FUFA Women Super League after guiding She Corporate to their maiden league title.

She starred through the aforementioned season with five goals and eight assists before guiding She Corporate to the final of the Cecafa Zonal qualifiers of the CAF Women’s Champions League where they lost to the eventual winners Simba Queens 1-0 in Tanzania.

Her scintillating performance elevated her to the national team and was part of the squad that won the Cecafa Women’s Championship in Njeru and took part in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Sources reveal that Nassuna was surprised when she was initially named the best player instead of Nabbumba.

Following the rescinded declaration, Nassuna was quick to congratulate Nabbumba through her official Twitter account.
