Vihiga Queens FC have officially been crowned champions of the Kenya Women’s Premier League for the fourth time in history.

Ugandan offensive midfielder Anitah Namata played a pivotal role in the well deserved success for the Bonfice Nyamunyamu coached team.

Namata scored a brace in a 2-1 win over Nakuru City Queens last week and subsequently won the championship.

Her scintillating performance throughout the season saw her scoring 10 goals and produced seven assists.

Namata’s compatriot Winnie Babirye who joined the club in the middle of the season, followed the footsteps of Joan Nabirye as the Ugandan players to have won the league title with Vihiga Queens.

Vihiga Queens beat their closest rivals Gaspo Women 2-1 in the final game of the season to finish with 55 points, seven better than the latter.

The Kenya Women’s Premier League has attracted a total of four Ugandan players; Adrine Birungi (Gaspo Women) and Catherine Nakiridde (Thika Queens) are the others.

Vihiga Queens will represent Kenya in the upcoming Women’s Champions League Qualifiers to be held in Uganda in August.

Other qualified teams are Kampala Queens (Uganda), AS Kigali (Rwanda), CBE FC (Ethiopia), Buja Queens (Burundi), JKT Queens (Tanzania), New Generation (Zanzibar) and South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars.
