The year 1978 will always be special in Ugandan football. The Uganda Cranes reached the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final and despite losing 2-0 to the hosting nation Ghana, that match remains Uganda’s main achievement in the world football so far.
During the SC Villa’s Linglong sponsorship unveiling on Thursday, the chairman Board of Trustees at the club Gerald Ssendawula has revealed how he has been instrumental in development of football in country.
Ssendawula who was the FUFA chairman (President) at time praised himself by stating that he remains the only person to have led the Uganda to it’s main achievement in football
“I have played a vital role towards the development of football in this country. I was the chairman of FUFA when we reached the final of the Africa Cup of nations and remain the only person to have done so.” Said the former FUFA Chairman
He added that for any national team to perform at international events it has to start with clubs
“It is the clubs that identify potential materials to the national team. You need clubs to be building young and formidable teams. This will help national teams to also deliver success at international competitions.” Said Ssendawula
Meanwhile, since the 1978 AFCON Finals in Ghana, the Uganda Cranes have only managed progress to the continental showpiece twice in 2017 and 2019
