Bombers scoop seven medals at Africa Boxing Championship

Seven members on the Uganda Boxing national team (Bombers) scooped medals at the 2023 Africa Elite Boxing Championship in Cameroon.

The medal tally in Cameroon is the most ever the Bombers have clinched in a single Africa Boxing Championship for the country. Only the Rabat 2017 edition comes close with five medals whereas at the previous edition they only managed two bronze medals.

Uganda was represented by 17 boxers at the event that was held in Yaounde with two walking away with silver and five winning bronze.

Uganda’s lightweight boxer Wasswa Ssali Amir alias Black skin clinched silver after defeat to South Africa’s Sogwayi Sanele in the final on Saturday.

Light Welterweight female boxer Erina Namutebi also settled for silver following her defeat to Algeria’s Chahib Hichrak in the women’s final on Saturday.

Ssali and Namutebi will also return home richer than they left with each scooping $10000 (Shs36m).

Meanwhile, the bronze medalists are Ukasha Matovu (Welterweight), Ronald Okello(, Solomon Geko (Super heavyweight), Grace Nankinga and Lady’s captain Emily Nakalema.

The five medalists will each earn $5000(Shs18) while quarterfinalists Muzamir Ssemuddu, James Baraka, Lawrence Kayiwa and Sharua Ndagire will each bag $12500.

The team will depart Cameroon aboard Ethiopian airways at 2:45Pm will land in entebbe at 12:55 past midnight.
