NEC go Top with narrow win over Bright Stars

Hussein Mbalangu’s NEC FC moved to the top of the Uganda Premier league table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Soltilo Bright Stars at Nakivubo Stadium on Wednesday.

Paul Mucureezi scored the all important goal from the spot in the second period of the contest at Lugogo.

Soltilo Bright Stars forward Nelson Senkatuka had his penalty saved by NEC FC goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo in the 39th minute.

Earlier into the close contest, Muzamir Mutyaba came close to firing the hosts into the lead but his effort was cleared off the line.

With six minutes to the halftime breather, the visitors were awarded a penalty when returning Patrick Bayiga handed the ball in the forbidden area.

Senkatuka was entrusted with the responsibility but failed to beat NEC custodian Ssebwalunyo from 12 yards.

The home side were awarded a penalty with 15 minutes to regulation time.

Mucureezi converted to send the Soldier Boys to the summit with 26 points, two above second placed Vipers SC who play BUL FC on Saturday at Kitende.

Ian Mutenda’s Bright Stars on the other hand are at the foot of the league table with just six points in 12 games.
