Allan Okello scored inside the second minute of the second half to earn Vipers a hard-fought 1-0 away win against Maroons, extending their lead in Uganda Premier league over NEC FC at the top of the table to eight points with five games to go.

Vipers came into this contest after their 3-1 win over second placed NEC FC in their previous league game last week at Kitende.

On Thursday at Luzira, the Venoms needed Okello’s penalty to break the deadlock shortly after the break.

Maroons had kept the visitors at bay in the first half but two minutes after the recess, defender Edward Kabona handled Karim Watambala’s shot in the forbidden area for Vipers penalty.

Okello took over the responsibility and fired the Venoms into the lead with his 17th league goal.

The hosts had a golden opportunity to at least earn a late point but Norman Odipio’s strike three minutes to regulation time but the crossbar.

The win lifted Vipers to 59 points at the top of the table with NEC, who host Mbale Heroes on Friday, eight points adrift with a game in hand.
