Mawokota under the stewardship of David Katono Mutono will be seeking glory this year after recruitment massively ahead of the 2025 campaign.
They scooped last year’s most valuable player Amour Munogera from Buweekula, Konge Sazili joined from Kyaddondo, Wafula Alex from Gomba, South Sudan forward Mamur Irival from Kabula and Twin brothers George Kati and George Isingoma Wasswa from St Mary’s Secondary School Kitende are also part of the team. Pius Ssebulime who is among the new recruits will not be part of the team following his move to the USA.
Mutono last year led Kyaggwe to their maiden Masaza Cup final and will this year be aiming for glory at Mawokota who last won the prestigious event in 2013.
Mawokota are also boosted by the return of Dr Lawrence Mulindwa, a man with insatiable desire of winning things. He will be serving Mawokota in the capacity of a patron while Harunah Kyobe is the team manager.
Buweekula on the other hand badly need to win the Masaza Cup title having lost two finals in 2012 and 2021 to Bulemeezi and Buddu respectively.
This term, they decided to give experienced coach Felix Ssekabuuza a go again having reached the semifinal stage last year before being eliminated by Mutono’s Kyaggwe.
Buweekula bolstered their squad with experienced midfielder Kayongo Micheal from Buddu Ashraf Kigozi and goalkeeper Sulaiman Ssali, both from Mawokota among others.
Ssekabuuza’s technical bench has Ibrahim Kirya with whom they won the 2020 Masaza Cup trophy at Gomba along with Davis Nnono and Ibrahim Kyobe all have huge Masaza Cup experience.
Last year, Buweekula eliminated Mawokota at the quarterfinal stage winning 1-0 at Buwama before securing a semifinal slot in Mubende a 1-1 stalemate to prevail 2-1 on aggregate.
They will aim for maximum points against the three time competition winners at Buwama. Mawokota have previously won the event in 2005, 2007 and 2013.
Meanwhile, Simon Peter Mugerwa’s Kyaggwe will begin their campaign against Kkooki at Bishops SS in Mukono while Asaph Mwebaze will take charge of his first game in the competition when his Mawogola side lock horns with Butambala at Mawogola.
Busujju will host Busiro while Bugerere will battle Buvuma in the other games on Sunday.
