The Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare has reviewed sporting year 2024 as he sets sight on a promising 2025.
During the end of year press briefing on Monday, Rukare revealed that UOV was able to hold close 98% of the scheduled activities for 2024.
“The Uganda Olympic Committee/Commonwealth Games Uganda in 2024 was able to achieve a number of milestones in line with our strategic plan. Along the way, we experienced some hurdles as well. Overall, we look back to 2024 with a deep sense of satisfaction and look to 2025 with even more promise.”
“Over the year, we were able to hold 98% of the scheduled activities in our 2024 calendar.”
Said Rukare before adding,
“I would like to thank colleagues on the UOC/CGU Executive Committee for their unwavering commitment and guidance. We look forward to our continued collaboration. We firmly believe that 2025 will be a year full of sporting promise and activity.” He noted
UOC member associations such as Basketball, Archery, Netball, Swimming, Volleyball, Badminton, Taekwondo, Judo, Rugby, Athletics, Gymnastics, Boxing, Hockey, Table Tennis and Handball held several activities.
The Committee also held a number of engagements with its members including a session on the International Olympic Committee 2025-2028 quadrennial plan.
In the same year, UOC hosted the International Olympic Committee President Dr Thomas Bach as well as the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa Mr Mustafa Berraf.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Uganda had a team of 25 athletes (13 women and 12 men) winning 2 medals ( Joshua Cheptegei triumphed in the 10000m with Gold while Peruth Chemutai won Silver in the 3000m Steeplechase).
Uganda finished 55th overall and 7th in Africa.
Uganda also participated in the Africa Games held in Accra Ghana with one of the largest teams in recent history, winning 20 medals (4 Gold, 6 Silver and 10 Bronze) to rank 13th on the continent.
UOC has also forged partnerships with companies such as Nile Breweries, Kansai Plascon, Sanlam Insurance, Graphics Systems and Uganda Tourism Board. Cuban Olympic Committee, Bahrain Olympic Committee, Saudi Olympic Committee have also partnered with UOC during the year.
Uganda Olympic Committee further stamped partnerships with important pillars as Uganda Forestry Authority providing 1500 acres of land in five locations with the objective of setting up the largest Olympic forest in the Olympic global family.
