Former Uganda Cranes defender Savio Kabugo has outlined the main reasons why Ugandan players fail to succeed abroad.
Kabugo stated on his Twitter account that Ugandan players can never be respected without a national team call up.
“First and foremost a ugandan will never ever be respected without a national call up because they think best players have to be in national team and compete for there places in foreign lands.”
Greediness of agents,
“99% of our agents are after pocketing something, they don’t care about players tomorrow thats why most times they end up fighting with players and teams hence resulting into players contracts termination.”
Kabugo added that teams outside believe that a good young player has to start from grassroot level
“Teams out side believe that a good young player has to be taken to grass level so that they make a player they want which some of our players can’t accept like they want to go in team A direct which mostly fails us.”
Lack of Media protection
“Our media doesn’t protect there own players like everyone is’nt perfect but our very own publish news how there own players cheat age’ injury prone and so own and so forth that already fails players already.”
The former Cranes defender concluded by revealing that Ugandan players relax after signing juicy contracts
“Lastly its with us players, after signing a fair contract abroad we think we are on top of the world and we relax not knowing there are hungry West Africans who want the jobs.” Said Kabugo via Twitter
Kabugo has featured for SC Victoria University (now defunct), KCCA FC, URA FC, Proline FC, SC Villa, Congolese side AS Vita Club and Ethiopian side Sebeta City.
He has eight national team caps having made his Cranes debut on 6th February 2013 at the Amahoro stadium, Kigali in an international friendly game between Uganda and Rwanda.
Kabugo is much remembered because of the ninth minute header which ensured a crucial 1-0 victory for Uganda over Ghana in the penultimate 2015 Nations Cup qualifier at Namboole stadium.
