The Uganda national Boxing team ( Bombers) clinched three bronze medals at the just the concluded 13th African Games in Ghana.
The three boxing medals were won by Bombers captain Muzamir Semuddu, Kasim Murungi, and debutant Innocent Tumusiime.
Despite winning three medals at the event, Bombers skipper Ssemuddu believes the nation could have smiled to more medals in case each weight category had been represented.
“It was great for us to comeback with medals but my observation while in Ghana was that once a nation has better preparations, it’s easier for it to be represented in each weight category.” We had a team of seven boxers yet other nations had over twenty boxers and it was easy for them to yield more medals.” Said Ssemuddu
The Bomber captain named Ghana’s Henry Malm as his toughest opponent.
“My toughest opponent was Malm from Ghana, he was a great boxer and too brutal. The Egyptian who eliminated was too technical but not tough as the Ghanaian.”
Ssemuddu remains confident that he will deliver more medals for the nation.
While in Ghana, Ssemuddu knocked out Togolese Holonue Akoussan at the round of 16 and in the Quarterfinal he overcame Ghana’s Henry Malm. He lost to Egyptian Elsayad Racab Omar at the semifinal stage.
Owen Kibira, debutant Innocent Amoko, Sharua Ndagire, and Erina Namutebi are the other boxers who represented the nation and all were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage.
The team was under the tutelage of Olympian and former African Games gold medalist Patrick Lulihanda with Kyengera boxing club’s Juma Nsubuga as his assistant.
